For our visit to Barbados, I joined a tour to see the rainforest and
explore Harrison's Cave. The British heritage of the island was
strongly evident from the style of buildings, the way fields were laid
out, and of course the accents.
Barbados was originally inhabited by the Arawaks but were conquered by
the cannibalistic Caribs in 1200. It's reported that Caribs ate and
entire French ship crew in 1596. The Spanish took over the island in
1492 and enslaved the Caribs, but smallpox and tuberculosis wiped out
the Caribs, and the Spanish abandoned the island due to its lack of
mineral deposits.
